Protect HVAC coils, fans and internal filters with made-to-measure flexible screens that capture airborne debris outside the equipment.
Low Static Pressure Air Intake Filters for Mechanical Plant
These are not general-purpose insect screens or standard window mesh. The filter media is specifically engineered for high-volume and high-velocity air movement, with low resistance across the intake face when correctly specified and maintained. They help stop leaves, insects, pollen, dust and airborne debris before it reaches coils, fans and internal filters, while maintaining low airflow resistance when correctly specified and maintained. Typical static pressure values are:
| Air velocity | Static pressure |
|---|---|
| 200 fpm | 0.012” w.g. |
| 400 fpm | 0.042” w.g. |
| 600 fpm | 0.091” w.g. |
This makes the screens suitable for commercial plant where airflow, equipment protection and maintenance access all need to be considered.
Air Intake Screens for HVAC, Chillers, AHUs and Cooling Towers
Flexible filter screens can be fitted to a wide range of external mechanical equipment, including:
- Air-cooled chillers
- Rooftop units
- Air handling units
- Cooling towers
- Condenser coils
- Generator intakes
- External louvres
- Dry air coolers
- Machine cabinet housing fans
They are particularly useful for large intake areas, irregular shapes, non-magnetic surfaces or locations where a flexible mounted system is better suited than a rigid framed screen.
Air Intake Mesh Filter Grades
Standard Duty Air Intake Screens
A practical option for everyday plant protection. Standard Duty screens help capture leaves, insects, pollen and general seasonal debris, while maintaining a low impact on airflow. This grade is often used where a cost-effective, washable screen is required for routine commercial HVAC protection.
Best suited to: general rooftop units, air handlers, louvres, generator intakes and air-cooled chillers.
Fine Mesh Air Intake Screens
Fine Mesh is designed for sites where smaller particles are more of a concern, such as dust, pollen, sand, construction debris or very small insects. The poly-fine mesh has inherent static properties that help attract fine particulate during airflow, making it suitable for more sensitive or debris-prone environments.
Best suited to: AHUs, chillers, dry air coolers, sites affected by fine dust, pollen-heavy locations and environments with smaller airborne contaminants.
Heavy Duty Air Intake Screens
Heavy Duty screens are built for tougher commercial and industrial conditions. The smooth vinyl-coated polyester surface is non-stick and non-porous, helping debris release more easily during cleaning. This grade includes a rip-stop feature to help prevent tear propagation, reinforced binding, high UV resistance, mould and mildew resistance, and a typical service life of 10+ years.
Best suited to: exposed plant, cooling towers, high-demand HVAC systems, debris-heavy sites and applications where long-term durability is a priority.
Made to Measure Air Intake Screens for Your Equipment
Every screen is manufactured to the dimensions of the intake area being protected. This helps achieve a secure fit and reduces gaps around the perimeter. Depending on the application, screens can be supplied with:
- Quick-release twist lock fasteners
- Heavy-duty grommets
- Self-tapping screws with bonded washers
- PVC track mounting
- Anodised aluminium track mounting
The right fixing method will depend on the equipment casing, access requirements and how often the screens need to be removed for cleaning.
Reduce HVAC Maintenance and Coil Cleaning
By catching debris externally, flexible filter screens help reduce the amount of material reaching coils, internal filters and fan sections. For maintenance teams, this can make inspections quicker and cleaning more straightforward. Depending on the mesh grade and installation method, screens can usually be cleaned with a soft brush, vacuum or hose. They do not replace internal filtration, but they provide a useful first stage of protection for external plant.
Choosing the Right Mesh Grade for Your Air Intake Screen
| Requirement | Recommended grade |
|---|---|
| General leaves, insects and seasonal debris | Standard Duty |
| Fine dust, pollen, sand or small insects | Fine Mesh |
| Exposed or demanding locations | Heavy Duty |
| Long service life and easier cleaning | Heavy Duty |
| Sensitive intake areas | Fine Mesh |
| Cost-effective everyday protection | Standard Duty |
If you are unsure which option is right for your site, Streme can advise based on your equipment type, intake dimensions, photographs and maintenance requirements.
