Door Fly Screens are incredibly effective at keeping insects out of your home and they are more user friendly (as well as insect and environmentally friendly) than fly paper and fly sprays. Screening can be tricky to start with - doors come in all shapes and sizes and there are many types of fly screen - but the investment will be worth it once your screens are doing their job.

What types of door fly screen are there?

We have a variety of screen types, some are designed for specific door styles and others are suitable for more than one door style. Here is an overview of each type of screen

Hinged door fly screen - this screen is made in the shape of a rectangular aluminium frame and fitted with a mesh. This sort of screen is generally fitted onto the door frame with aluminium lift out hinges on one side and magnetic catches on the other. When you open your door, you close the screen to cover the opening. There are single or twin screen versions available.

Roller door fly screen - this screen operates in a similar way to a roller blind, but with side channels. A cassette with mesh is fitted vertically to the side of a door frame and the side channels run horizontally from the cassette to opposite side of the frame to guide the mesh as it is pulled across. Available as a single screen with a magnetic closing channel or a twin screen for larger doors such as French Doors.

Twin sliding door fly screen - this screen is similar to the secondary glazing concept. An outer frame/track is fitted into the door reveal and two framed insect mesh screens fit into the frame. Each screen covers half the width of the door with an overlap in the middle to create a seal. Both screens slide aside to allow access.

Single sliding door fly screen - this system consists of a single sliding screen mounted on a top and bottom track. Designed for a traditional sliding patio door, this screen covers the opening when in use and sits over the fixed glass panel when the door is closed.

Pleated door fly screen - as the name suggests, the pleated screen uses a mesh with a series of pleats rather than a flat mesh. The system consists of a top, bottom and side channels and single or twin meshes which pull across to cover the door opening. These screens work well with larger doors, especially bifold doors, because each mesh panel can be made to three metres in width giving a total span of six metres for the twin system.

How do I measure?

The way you measure will depend on the product you choose. Each product has a measuring guide which is reached by selecting the "How to Measure" tab on the top right hand side of the product page. Many products also have "how to" videos to take you through measuring and other product options.

Do Fly Screens block the light?

Fly Screens will reduce the light to a certain degree and this depends on the mesh chosen. Modern high visibility insect meshes such as BetterVue have a minimal effect on light and airflow whereas a finer mesh such as Midge Mesh will affect light and airflow more. If you wish to check for yourself we can send a FOC sample.

Can your screens be fitted to the outside of a building?

Yes - all screens have powder coated aluminium frames and weatherproof mesh and fixings so they can be fitted internally or externally.

What is the difference between Standard insect mesh and Midge mesh?

Standard insect mesh - 18 x 16 holes per square inch. This mesh is designed and manufactured to ensure maximum visibility (through the screen) ensuring as much light passes into the room as possible. We recommend this mesh for all areas of the UK except in parts of Scotland where Midges are present and other parts of the UK where Corn Flies and Thunder Bugs/Thrips are present.

Examples of insects this mesh will keep out are: Bees & Wasps, Bluebottles, Cluster Flies, Crane Flies. Daddy-Long-Legs, House Flies, Hornets, Ladybirds, Mosquitoes, Moths, Butterflies, Spiders

Midge mesh - 30 x 20 holes per square inch. Midge mesh has a tighter weave than Standard Insect Mesh to ensure Midges, cannot penetrate, however, the visibility and airflow is reduced slightly. This mesh will keep out the same as Standard Insect Mesh + smaller insects such as Midges and We recommend this mesh in parts of Scotland where Midges are present and other parts of the UK where potentially smaller insects can be found.
